Bridge Documentation

This beautiful arch bridge was designed by a prominent engineering firm and is a landmark for the region. William G. Grove was the designer of the bridge, at the time this bridge was built he was working for the famous engineering firm Robinson and Steinman. Grover had earlier worked with the American Bridge Company and after building this bridge he would find new employment with the Connecticut State Highway Department. The substructure contractor for this bridge was Merritt-Chapman & Scott of New London, Connecticut. Although as an in-state firm this may not seem surprising, it should be noted that Merritt-Chapman & Scott often got work on Robinson and Steinman designed bridges across the country. As of 2020, a major rehabilitation of this bridge is taking place.
