Bridge Documentation

This is an uncommon 1960s fixed high level bridge in Florida. In the 1950s and 1960s, along the coastline, Florida typically built lower level bridges with movable bascule spans for boats, despite having plenty of physical room for the approaches of a high level fixed bridge (due to the wide nature of the waterways). Today many of the movable bridges are indeed being demolished and replaced with high level fixed bridges. This bridge stands out as a fixed high level bridge from this older 1960s period. It is not known why a fixed bridge was built here. Further down this same road, a bascule bridge can be found, which is ironically at risk for demolition and replacement with a modern high level bridge.
