This largely unaltered riveted plate girder bascule was replaced with a fixed high level bridge. A large number of bascule bridges in Florida have a dark future because nobody (boats or cars) wants to be held up waiting for a bridge lift, and unlike areas elsewhere in the country such as Chicago where dense urban development around narrow rivers precludes a high level fixed bridge to replace bascule bridges, Florida's very wide waterways have plenty of room to support the long approaches for a high level fixed bridge. As such, many bascule bridges in Florida are being demolished and replaced.
