The first recorded bridge at this location was a wooden bridge that dated to 1845. In 1859 a cast iron arch bridge consisting of three arch ribs was built as a replacement. The bridge seen today was a replacement for the cast iron arch bridge and was built in 1907 as a riveted steel arch bridge. The bridge features six arch ribs, with the outer fascia arch ribs having ornamental flowers on them. Ornamental railings remain in place on this bridge as well. Some sources claim that this bridge's name originally came from the presence of prostitutes in the area, while a more contemporary legend is that two lovers giving each other a kiss on the bridge will be united for life, or someone may find the love of their live on the bridge. It certainly seems possible that you might find a lover on this bridge, it certainly is used by a lot of people, so the chances of finding someone might be fairly high!
