This bridge is an unusual continuous deck plate girder bridge with variable depth (arched) girders. In the middle of the bridge, the girder forms a larger arch shape, but there is the unusual detail of a pier located as the crown of this arch, visually breaking what looks like a single arched girder span into two spans in reality. The other spans have piers placed at the more common location, at the ends of the girder arches.
This bridge was honored in the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC)'s annual Prize Bridge awards. This bridge won Award Class 2, for bridges with fixed spans under 400 feet and costing more than $500,000. The listed cost to build this bridge was in fact right around $500,000. The bridge was one of a number of large bridges built in this region to accommodate the reservoir created when Buford Dam was built.
