The community of Clarks Fork has an interesting history of bridges. At one time, there was a highway truss bridge which was the crossing cars used to get over the river. This bridge was documented by Historic American Engineering Record. The bridge was eventually closed to traffic, and traffic was rerouted to this bridge, which was an abandoned railroad truss bridge. The railroad truss bridge served as a vehicular truss bridge until the completion of a new highway bridge right next to the railroad truss bridge in 2003. At this point, the railroad truss bridge was converted for use by non-motorized traffic only. This is the function that the bridge retains today.
The bridge is an outstanding example of a multi-span railroad truss bridge. Despite its long history, the bridge superstructure retains good historic integrity with no major alterations. The bridge's heavy construction and relatively narrow roadway clearly convey the bridge's railroad origins.
To complicate the bridge story in this area, there is an additional, active railroad bridge nearby.
