The railroad bridge at Sandpoint is an iconic structure because of its enormous length. The length of the bridge proper between abutments is approximately 4800 feet, but there is also an earthen causeway that it shares with the equally long highway bridge to the west. Reportedly, a railroad bridge was built here by Northern Pacific railroad in 1882. The current bridge was in turn reportedly built in 1905. In more recent years, including 2008 and possibly other dates, a large number of the approach spans have been replaced including the replacement of piers/bents and girder spans. However, the most historically significant span, the through truss swing span, remains in place. A few historic riveted through plate girders adjacent to the swing span also remain. The historic spans are traditionally composed. In a region with few truss bridges of any kind, the swing span stands out as highly significant.
