This bridge is a traditionally composed example of a multi-span deck plate girder bridge. It likely dates to the 20th Century. The bridge sits on piers that alternate between stone and concrete. This sort of pattern usually is an indication that the previous bridge likely had half as many spans (it may have been a truss bridge based on how long these spans would have been) and when the plate girder bridge was built, concrete piers were added to facilitate the shorter, more numerous girder spans. Thus, the stone piers would be older than the plate girder and may date to the 1800s. Both the stone and concrete piers were designed twice as wide as needed to accommodate widening the bridge to handle more tracks, but this never occurred. The southern half of the piers remain unused.
