Cary Avenue is a street that does not have a vehicular bridge spanning the ravine at this location. The road ends at the ravine in an abrupt manner that makes it look like there might have been a bridge here at one time, or perhaps one was planned but never built. In any case, the narrow pedestrian bridge built in 1928 provides a non-motorized crossing for the sidewalk of Cary Avenue. This bridge was listed as a historic landmark by the City in 2011. However this was not enough to stop plans to demolish and replace the bridge. It would appear that the primary interest in the bridge locally was the beautiful ornamental railings on the bridge. While the railings are beautiful, the bridge is also technologically noteworthy as a cantilever deck girder bridge. The beams for the central span cantilever out over the valley, with a "L" shape cutout in the cantilever arm girders providing a surface for the suspended span bearings. The girders are built-up with rivets, and the steel tower bents are also riveted. The riveted cantilever design has engineering significance as an unusual small-scale and footbridge application of cantilever bridge technology which was usually reserved for large river bridges.
