This is a rapidly increasing example of a historic bridge over the Illinois River, and is noted for its lift span as well as its seven fixed through truss spans, making it also rare as a long, multi-span through truss bridge in Ilinois.
IDOT's reprehensible slaughter of historic bridges on the Illinois River, an apparant effort to totally destroy every remaining historic bridge on the entire river, has resulted in this being one of a rapidly diminishing population of historic metal truss bridges (both fixed and movable) on the river. This is as of 2021 one of the surviving spans, and one of the few bridges that as of this writing in 2021 does not appear to have active demolition plans. This is likely because IDOT is so busy destroying Illinois River history elsewhere. This bridge will almost certainly be targeted for scrapping after other ongoing demolition and replacement projects are completed. It is perhaps too much to hope that a glimmer of sanity will arise and this bridge might be preserved and rehabilitated. More likely, IDOT will replace the bridge. If the replacement bridge is a fixed span, this would require leveling a large amount of the hillside (or Hardin itself) to the west of the bridge due to the location of the navigation channel and the hill's proximity to the river here.
