This bridge is a large riveted cantilever truss bridge. It is noted both for its roadway width of 55 feet, making it wider than most riveted cantilever truss bridge. It is also noted for its unusual configuration with five spans of cantilever trusses. Most cantilever truss bridges have a traditional three cantilever truss spans. This span configuration gives the bridge a distinctive landmark appearance.

In 2005, this bridge was spared demolition despite a need for a larger interchange that encroached into the truss. To solve the problem, several truss panels of the northern end of the bridge were removed, and a new portal bracing was installed, essentially shortening the bridge so it was not in the way of the new interchange. Before the truss was shortened, the bridge length was 3,216 feet (980.2 meters) and after it became 3,036 feet (925.3 meters).
