This bridge is a narrow, one-lane highway over railroad plate girder overpass that provides a grade separation between Oak Street, a local city street, and the busy railroad line. In the Chicagoland area, there are numerous grade separations, but most of those which are old, including those of the plate girder type, are railroad over highway bridges. Comparatively few examples are highway over railroad, and those which are tend to be modern and lacking in historic value. As such, this bridge stands out. It is officially found eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Traffic on the two way one-lane bridge is controlled by stoplight signals. This is important because the bridge has a "hump" to it making it difficult to see the other end of the bridge to see if there is opposing traffic.
Despite the bridge's historic significance, demolition and replacement is slated for this historic bridge.
