This bridge is a later example of a riveted cantilever truss bridge. Typical of later examples of this type, the bridge makes a limited use of built-up beams, and those that are present don't have the lattice and v-lacing common on older examples. This gives the bridge a more plain, simple appearance. The bridge is very similar to the Red Wing Bridge over the Mississippi River. It is known that the same contractor built both bridges. Because of this, and also the visual similarities between these two bridges located in different states, it is assumed that these two bridges also share the same consulting engineer, Alfred Benesch. The Peru Bridge remains in good condition and was repainted in 2009.
