This bridge is an uncommon example of a concrete deck girder in Illinois. The bridge has articulated floorbeams that are easily visible under the bridge. Many short-span concrete through girders (60 foot span and under) were built in the rural parts of Illinois, however concrete deck girders are rare in Illinois. Through girders were useful for crossings where there was little or no river valley (common with many rivers and creeks in Illinois), while deck girders are better suited for crossings with valleys, since they place the superstructure below the deck. Here however, this deck girder bridge accommodates very nicely one of the many ravines in this area. The bridge's superstructure and substructure appears to be unaltered. However, the deck and original railings have been replaced. If the 1915 construction date given for this bridge is accurate, it also is an early surviving example of a concrete girder bridge in Illinois, since most date to 1916 or later.
