This bridge has an unusual history. It reportedly was built in 1882. As originally built all spans were fixed pin-connected Pratt through truss spans. In 1916, a derailment collapsed part of the bridge and at that time two spans were replaced with deck plate girder spans. Later, likely in the 1930s, one of the truss spans was retrofitted with towers and turned into a vertical lift span. The actual lift span is the same fixed truss span, with the towers and connecting beams having simply been added to the existing trusses. The bridge is historically and technologically significant not only for its 19th century pin-connected trusses, but the conversion into a lift span is also historically significant as a notable engineering achievement.
