This bridge is one of two similar suspension foot bridges in this park. They are noted for their attractive latticed towers. This bridge retains a plaque on top of the tower indicating it was built by Joliet Bridge and Iron Company. These bridges are two rare examples of bridges known to be built by this noteworthy Illinois bridge builder that are not truss bridges. The bridges do not have any stiffening trusses or girders, which means that the deck can move a fair bit under load. Bridges with these characteristics, including these two, are often called swinging bridges.
This bridge has main cables that are not original and appear to have been replaced. Some of the suspenders appear to be replacements as well. The deck is currently wooden with wooden railings, none of which are original. It is not known if this deck replicates the original design. The original railings on the bridge likely were less tall and massive. The method of supporting the deck appears to continue to follow the original design. The suspender cables end in straps that hold wooden floor beams. The bridge's towers retain excellent historic integrity and do not appear altered.
This bridge is tagged with the following special condition(s): Footbridge
