Bridge Documentation

Although a significant, early example of a Luten design concrete arch bridge, this one was allowed to deteriorate then severely altered. Pretty much anything that could be done to ruin the beauty and historic integrity of this bridge was done. Hideous corrugated steel lines the arch barrel. The spandrel wall had steel tie rods stuck into it, and was also covered in shotcrete or gunite and to complete the look, was topped off with a layer of bright orange snow fence which is wrapped all over it.

Located in a park setting next to an art museum, the neglect followed by poorly executed repairs of this bridge, which was itself a work of art at one time, is appalling, especially in a state that usually treats its historic bridges better than this. This is made worse by the fact that this bridge is one of the oldest surviving Luten arch bridges in the state. Located in Luten's base of operations (Indianapolis) and built by his main company (National Concrete Company) this bridge should have been repaired in a way that maintained the bridge's historic and aesthetic integrity.
