Bridge Documentation

This bridge technically is not in the state of Indiana due to the way the state line follows an old alignment of the river. However it is being shown as a Kentucky and Indiana bridge for clarity as many people think of this as an interstate bridge.

This bridge was completed in 1932 and is an increasingly rare example of a riveted cantilever truss bridge. In 1965, a second cantilever truss bridge was built to form a one-way couplet of bridges. Today the bridges are commonly called the Twin Bridges, although when looking at the bridges it is obvious they are anything but twins, since the two bridges both have the design details of the period in which they were built, such as more v-lacing and lattice on the built-up beams of the 1932 span.

The bridge was designed by noted firm Modjeski and Masters, a company with extensive experience designing cantilever truss bridges.

The bridge's approach system consists of Warren deck truss spans and deck plate girder spans.

The Kansas City Bridge Company of Kansas City, Missouri constructed the substructure of the bridge, and American Bridge Company of New York, New York was low bidder on the superstructure contract. Rieth-Riley Construction Company of Goshen, Indiana had some involvement with the construction of the bridge as well.

HistoricBridges.org currently only has overview photos of this bridge.
