This bridge is noteworthy for having excellent historic integrity. Unlike many arch bridges in Indiana which have been altered, this bridge retains original design and materials including original railings. Only some light standards are missing from the bridge. The arches and the railings are all handsomely detailed from an architectural standpoint. A close examination of these architectural elements reveals the intricacy of the designs. For example, the inset rectangular panels on the railings are not just a single inset rectangle like many bridges might have had. Instead, the inset portion has a partially inset border around it as well. The center inset portion of the panels also has exposed aggregate in the concrete which gives it a different texture than the rest of the railing. The arches of the bridge show a similar attention to detail. This finely crafted bridge thus remains today in excellent condition, although there is minor spalling on some areas such as the base of the railings. Now would be a great time to address such issues so that they do not worsen and become more difficult to repair and/or begin to damage the architectural elements of this bridge.
Information and Findings From DHPA Historic Bridge SurveyStatement of Significance Aside from its skew, the design of this bridge is fairly standard for an urban structure of its date. It does retain its architectural integrity. Architectural Description William S. Moore may have designed this 197'6", three-span structure. The Rieth-Riley Construction Company built it. Offset by 15 degrees, the rings are elliptical and rise 10' for a span of 64'6" each. Solid spandrel walls retain the earth fill which supports the 44' asphalt roadway between concrete sidewalks and paneled parapet walls with lampposts. Other Information 237 feet long; light standards removed Bridge Considered Historic By Survey: Yes |
