This bridge is composed of three parts, one that passes over St. Joseph River and the other two which pass over roads on each side of the river. Of the three the overpass portions are the most interesting. The bridge features attractive concrete railings, which complement a concrete encasement that covers the steel girders. The piers have an attractive design as well. The main spans over the river in contrast are more simple deck plate girders, although they retain original metal pipe railings.
Information and Findings From DHPA Historic Bridge SurveyStatement of Significance The design of these deck girders is rather conventional. The whole retains its original structural integrity and outer-span decoration. Architectural Description Two six-span plate girders sit side-by-side upon concrete piers, abutments, and wingwalls. The girders of the outer spans on each end of the structure are encased in concrete and decorated. The girders' flange ends are rounded. Attached towards the girder tops, I floor beams and the flanges support the railroad ties. Bridge Considered Historic By Survey: Not Rated |
