This bridge is an uncommon but traditional example of a cantilever deck truss bridge. It includes the traditional hinge pins that hold a suspended span in the center main span. The approach spans are pre-stressed concrete and not original (pre-stressed concrete was not used in the 1930s). This bridge today only carries northbound traffic, with a modern bridge next to it carrying southbound traffic. A busy railroad line with stopped trains runs along the south side of the river. The north side of the river is fenced with No Trespassing signs along the levy. All this makes photographing the bridge difficult. It can be viewed to some extent from the north side, where 5th Street meets the levy however.
