This bridge is a Marsh arch bridge that suffers from greater levels of deterioration than other similar bridges in Kansas. While bad from a preservation standpoint, it does allow visitors to see how a Marsh arch bridge does not rely on rebar rods for reinforcing, but instead solid, built-up riveted steel... which has been revealed by the spalling of the concrete.
The drawing shown above was provided in the KHRI Survey Report. The drawing references the previous bridge as a 100 foot Pratt truss span with a 30 foot A truss. The "A truss" was likely referring to what is normally called a Kingpost truss. There is one inconsistency/mystery. The substructure of the previous bridge is shown and referenced as stone, and was to be removed. However, riveted steel caissons can be seen next to the bridge today, which one would presume are from the previous bridge. Perhaps the Marsh Engineering Company was confused and incorrectly drew and described the previous bridge substructure as stone?
