This rare historic bowstring pony truss was relocated into a park setting, creating a beautiful heritage attraction for the park. Reportedly, there are plans to move additional bridges to this park and create what is thought to be the first such trail in Kentucky! As was the case in its final years in highway service in the previous location, the bowstring truss itself does not carry a live load. Overall, the truss lines retain good historic integrity, although two modifications are worth mentioning to better understand the appearance of the bridge today. Firstly, as it often the case when trusses are reused as non-structural elements, the floorbeams have been "stubbed" into the load-bearing stringers. Another more unusual, and visually notable, change is that for reasons unknown the vertical members with outriggers were lowered slightly which required threaded rod to be welded onto the top of these vertical members. Bridge historians will no doubt immediately notice the unusual appearance this gives the bridge. Also unusual is that the trusses were mounted in such a manner that the bottom chord is above the deck level. While this makes it convenient for visitors to see the various parts of the bridge, it does make the bridge look a bit different than the original design. Overall however, this is a positive outcome as very few historic bridges have been preserved in Kentucky, and this bridge can serve as a beautiful heritage attraction in this park setting.
