This is one of two similar bridges of very beautiful design over this canal. Unlike the nearby Bourne Bridge, this bridge was built near some natural hills that eliminated the need for deck truss approach spans. However, unlike the Bourne Bridge, this bridge also includes a concrete span over Sandwich Road. This span does not appear in the National Bridge Inventory, nor is its length included in the given overall length of the Sagamore Bridge, perhaps because it is considered an integral part of the bridge abutment. This span is configured with two very deep arched fascia girders, and two shallow straight girders in between under the roadway. If this Sandwich Road span is included in the overall bridge length, the bridge would be about 1,515 feet. Also of note, original riveted light fixtures remain on this bridge, albeit with modern light equipment attached.
