This is a classic example of Michigan's straight chord through girder standard, built to the 40 foot standard. Sadly, this bridge has been improperly maintained. Excessive application of road salt, a moisture-trapping asphalt deck, and dirt build-up on the edge of the roadway leading to grass growing on the bridge, have all led to a loss of historic and structural integrity on this bridge. This bridge is an example of how tax payer dollars and valuable historic bridges are being wasted due to a lack of a proper bridge care and maintenance program. This problem is a national one and is not something unique to Clare County.

This bridge is slated for demolition and replacement. The proposed replacement bridge as was shown in the bid package is displayed below. It will be ugly and look like any bridge built in Michigan over the past 20+ years.
