This bridge is an excellent and unaltered example of a grade separation designed to Michigan State Highway Department standards. The bridge includes highway department standard details including the decorative type R4 railing as well as the abutment design which includes a stepped design at the top. Presumably, this bridge was constructed when parallel I-96 was built to maintain the railroad elevation, since 24th Avenue likely was lowered during I-96 construction, since I-96 passes over 24th Avenue at this location.
Originally running from Grand Rapids to Grand Haven, this railroad no longer has rails west of Coopersville. The remainder is owned by the Coopersville and Marne Railway, which operates small tour trains. The railroad was a Grand Trunk Western Railroad line when this overpass was built.
