This bridge is one of two truss bridges on the rather long Pere Marquette Rail-Trail. The other is the Sanford Railroad Bridge. Both bridges are similar, but are so far apart they are each their own noteworthy historic landmarks on the rail-trail. Typical of rail-trails, the heritage value of this bridge is not being taken advantage of. The modern railings added to the bridge obstruct the view of the truss and do not have a very attractive appearance. HistoricBridges.org recommends that the railings be replaced with one of the less visually obtrusive railing designs available that still meet safety requirements. Further, interpretive signage describing the design, history, and significance of the bridge should be posted.
The below postcard shows the previous railroad truss bridge at this location. The bridge was a metal pin-connected Pratt through truss bridge. In the foreground is a former highway bridge, an exceedingly rare pin-connected Thacher through truss. Unfortunately, that bridge was lost a very long time ago.
