This 1906 stone arch bridge looks like a concrete arch bridge today because the stones were completely encased in concrete in 1958! While such an alteration seems distasteful today, it probably was seen as an improvement at the time, as the urban renewal thinking of the time would have seen a bridge that looked like concrete as "better" than an "old" stone arch bridge. The only positive outcome was the bridge had Michigan's attractive R4 railings added to it, which remain in place today.
