This bridge has been closed to traffic due to severe washing out of the soil around the concrete abutments and structural deterioration of the truss. It is unclear if there are replacement plans. However, despite the poor condition of this bridge, the truss could easily be lifted off its abutments, restored, and put into use in a new location, or on refurbished abutments at the original location. This bridge has not deteriorated so far that it cannot be preserved in some manner.
This bridge features a jack arch deck, which an uncommon deck type featuring curved corrugated metal spanning between deck stringers and filled with concrete above. Michigan has a disproportionately high number of bridges remaining with this deck type compared to other nearby states. However, the number of surviving examples has been dropping rapidly in Michigan. Restoration of the Haze Road Bridge could include a replication of the jack arch deck.
J&L is seen on the beams of this bridge. It may be an unusual abbreviated form of Jones and Laughlin, who normally display the full name on their rolled metal materials.
Because this bridge is the last remaining truss in the county, and due to the extremely small number of remaining truss bridges in northern Michigan, the preservation of this bridge should receive high priority.
