This small bridge is a typical example of a mid-20th Century steel stringer bridge built in Michigan. Characteristic of the period, it includes attractive "Type R4" railings. In 2012, a contract was let to rehabilitate this bridge. The contract included the demolition and replacement of the type R4 railings with modern so-called "Aesthetic parapet tube" railing. To call these railings "aesthetic", in comparison to the R4 railings, is rather inaccurate. The modern railings are essentially concrete barriers with metal poles on top. This bridge is a relatively wide bridge located on city street with a low speed limit. The need for modern railings is questionable. It is likely that reusing the existing railing panels, perhaps on replicated concrete posts, would serve the needs of this crossing just as well, while also retaining a more beautiful appearance.
