Bridge Documentation

The City of Flint has chosen to demolish all of its arch bridges that had found eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, and as such, only the ones that were not found eligible remain for consideration of eligibility and preservation. With the eligible bridges gone, the time has come to review the remaining Flint bridges which were found not eligible. The Leith Street Bridge is one such arch bridge. Unfortunately, this bridge has very little left of its original self to offer. Only the substructure and the arch ring are original. The spandrel walls, approach stringers, deck, sidewalk cantilevers, and railings are all not original and alter the original design of the bridge. The national bridge inventory seems to acknowledge this fact, since it actually gives an 1967 construction date for the bridge, which likely reflects the alteration, not the original construction.

As such, even with the other historic Flint arch bridges demolished, this bridge can only be assigned a limited level of significance. However it does remain a more attractive structure than a new bridge would be, and it does offer a glimpse at the design and appearance of an earth-filled concrete arch bridge.
