This is an arch bridge of considerable size for Michigan. It features pole railings, although modern Armco railings have been bolted onto them. A 1952 date was given for this bridge. This date is suspect since bridges of this form were not the thing to build in the 1950s. An undated photo on the Michigan Genealogy Website, as shown below, shows the Muir Bridge when first built. A second photo as found on a website about Lyons and Muir and is also shown below. Note that concrete paneled railings are on the bridge in these photos, indicating that the railings on the bridge today are not original. The pole railings on the bridge are an unusual design and are not new however. It is quite possible these pole railings were installed as part of a repair project, and that this project took place in 1952, which would explain where the incorrect NBI 1952 date came from. The style of the Muir Bridge, especially as seen in the photo below, seems more indicative of a bridge built between 1915 and 1940.
Michigan does not have a lot of concrete arch bridges, and this is the only known one in Ionia county.
2019 Update: The bridge has been bypassed and preserved for pedestrians as described below. However, the railings put on the bridge were not replicas of the original railings as originally planned. Instead, simple aluminium hand railings were placed on the bridge. A new concrete deck is in place, which does not cantilever out beyond the arches.
