Lake County and neighboring Osceola County have a few things in common. Each has essentially only one bridge with any noteworthy heritage value whatsoever in the entire county. In both counties, their one bridge is a concrete through girder bridge. Also, in both counties, the county road commission wants to demolish and replace the bridge. Moreover, the two bridges are located in a region that has very few historic bridges. Thus, even a bridge like this one with a modest level of historic significance is locally noteworthy as something worth preserving. Also, the bridge is actually not in very critical condition.. The bridge could be rehabilitated, not demolished and replaced as the county road commission is seeking funding for. Providing money for costly demolition and replacement seem a poor use of taxpayer dollars on the part of MDOT who has the job of dealing out the Local Bridge Program money that Lake County is requesting.
The county reports a 1938 construction date for this bridge, while the National Bridge Inventory does not list a date (the default 1900 date is given). 1938 seems to be after the period in which concrete girders were built in Michigan. 1928 seems a more appropriate construction date.
