This bridge is on old highway alignment. The current alignment of East Shore Road bypasses the river and continues east, bypassing this section of road and this bridge. This section of road is today a trail apparently intended for use by snowmobiles and ORVs, but typical of such facilities in the U.P., nothing physically prevents things like pickup trucks from using the road, which does happen. The bridge may be the only highway truss bridge remaining in Ontonagon County, unless more off-system bridges like this bridge remain to be found. Truss bridges are rare in this region. The bridge is a small example of its type and it is missing its railings. However, it is otherwise largely unaltered. The trusses has some deterioration, with issues including pack rust, and some bent members. These issues could easily be repaired as part of a preservation project. The concrete abutments however suffer from more problematic issues including a massive crack and substantial scour-related deterioration. If this facility is to continue to function as a trail, a long-term goal might be to replace the abutments and rehabilitate the historic truss superstructure. If the trail is not deemed important, this bridge would make a great candidate for relocation, restoration, and reuse on a trail elsewhere.
This historic bridge has been demolished. This map is shown for reference purposes only.
