This bridge is noteworthy as an individual example among a
group of small bridges in Genesee County that retain good historic integrity
and document a variation on a common late 1920s and early 1930s bridge
design in Michigan.
This bridge displays a minor variation of the
steel stringer design with concrete balustrade railings that was very
prolifically used for a surprisingly short period in Michigan, between 1928
and 1932. Unlike most of Michigan's balustrade steel stringer bridges,
several Genesee County examples include railings that do not feature
vertical lines on each balustrade spindle, and the shape of the spindle is a
little different. Another slight variation in the traditional balustrade
stringer design is the concrete facade/encasement of the outer edge of the
outer steel stringers. Rather than have a curved surface and/or ribs, the
concrete has a straight, angled design.
With no modern railings added to the bridge, and very little deterioration of any kind, the Atlas Road Bridge is among the more unaltered examples of this bridge type in the county. However severe spalling and loss of railing balustrades has diminished the integrity of the bridge.
