Bridge Documentation

This pedestrian overpass is included on this website because of its unusual steel hammerhead pier. Hammerhead style piers are usually concrete. Typical of overpasses in Detroit, this bridge has lost its original railing. A section of the original railing still remains in deteriorated condition on the east retaining wall north of the bridge. The bridge is next to a beautiful old school building that was abandoned but appears to be under restoration.

Above: This historical photo, reportedly dating to 1952, shows this bridge with its original railing. Also of interest, it appears to have American Bridge painted on the girder, indicating the builder of the bridge.
