Wayne County Road Commission stood out among Michigan's county road commissions for their industriousness and innovation. Rather than simply copy typical state standard plans, Wayne County designed and used its own standard bridge designs. The continuous reinforced concrete slab is one such example. Initially developed by the county in the 1940s during the World War II steel shortage as an alternative to steel stringers, the county continued to build these bridges into the 1950s. The bridges are distinguished by their lightweight piers (technically called bents) and the simple concrete barrier railings. with a single horizontal line on the outside as the only aesthetic detail. The Sheldon Road Bridge is an excellent example of a Wayne County concrete slab bridge. Built in 1946, it is one of the older examples, built during wartime. Under the bridge, the remains of stone abutments for a former bridge can be found.
