Highway plate girders of any construction date in Michigan are rare. However, this bridge is not only a highway structure, it appears to be rather old for a highway plate girder, perhaps dating to around 1900-1910. It is seated on stone abutments, which is also unusual for Michigan. Unfortunately, these stone abutments are falling apart, and will likely result in the collapse of this bridge in the future. The center pier is concrete, and may not be original, or could be a repair of a stone pier. There is a small possibility that this bridge might have been a single span structure when first built, with the pier added at some later date say in the 1950s, to strengthen the structure. The deck is a jack-arch deck. This bridge is a historically significant structure as an unusual design of bridge with decent historic integrity.
