Constructed in 1950, this overpass is among the oldest expressway overpasses in Michigan. This is because this section of US-23 was built before the freeway. Indeed the bridge was not really originally built to support a freeway, which explains why the roadway shoulders narrow to fit under the bridge. The bridge retains excellent historic integrity and has attractive architectural detailing on the abutments.
