This is a stringer bridge that features unusual railings that show up on Michigan bridges in certain counties. St. Clair County is another county in Michigan that has several bridges with this interesting railing style.
Severe deterioration to the edge of the deck has led the county to put barriers up on the edges of the deck and place signage to have motorists treat the bridge as a one-lane structure. The main part of the deck is still safe, however it has a certain roughness to it that is often seen with bridges on gravel roads. Van Atta Road likely was gravel some years ago, and this wear occurred during that point.
Obviously, this bridge will not be left standing by the county. It is unfortunate it was not properly maintained. If it has been maintained and preserved, it is an attractive bridge on a very beautiful section of roadway. The road around the bridge curves down a small hill to the river, and has tall trees along the road. The bridge was a nice compliment to this scenery.
