Learn about Michigan's Unique Concrete Camelback Bridges

1930 was the date given for the construction of this bridge. That date appears to be incorrect however, as this bridge utilizes a design similar to the Vernier Street Bridge that features a different way of designing the bottom portion of the girder. It didn't work out too well, as it appears to be made of concrete channel-shaped sections that tended to fall apart. Both the Lake Shore Drive Bridge and the Vernier Street Bridge have deterioration on them. Later concrete camelback bridges such as the M-64 Bridge featured a larger and more solid bottom section and have not deteriorated there. Given the appearance of the Lake Shore Drive Bridge, a construction date of 1921-1922 seems accurate.

Despite these problems, the overall physical condition of the bridge is excellent and it is today on a dead-end road. There is no reason why the bottom section of this bridge could not be repaired to ensure that this bridge remains a historic bridge attraction for the years to come.
