This bridge is a traditionally composed example of a plate girder railroad overpass. The likely reason there is a grade separation on what is today a county road is that this was once US-131 until the freeway was built past here in 1980.

The bridge retains historic integrity, however the additional of large panels of cyclone fencing to the inside of the girder greatly detracts from the appearance of the bridge. The bridge no longer serves railroad traffic. MDOT bought the railroad in 1975, trains stopped running soon after, and eventually the tracks were removed and it became the White Pine trail, a rail-trail from Grand Rapids to Cadillac.
