This bridge has been given a page on HistoricBridges.org only because it has a historic approach span.
The main span is a vertical lift bridge that was built in 1981. The 1981 bridge is neither historic nor attractive. In fact, it is hideously ugly. A traditional lifting girder at the ends of the lift span has been substituted for massive steel boxes at each corner of the lift span which look like a cancerous growth occurring on the top of the end posts. The enclosures for the sheaves at the top of the towers are just as ugly, being little more than solid steel boxes with no aesthetic qualities whatsoever.
The previous main span was a through truss swing span.
Somehow, a rivet-connected through truss approach span that was part of the original bridge managed to escape demolition and replacement in 1981. This span does have historic value and is worth noting. The bridge is a traditionally composed example of its type and appears to retain good historic integrity.
