This bridge is one of several girder bridges on this section of roadway. This one stands out not only for its length and design, but also as the easiest to visit among these bridges.
This bridge is a rare example of a steel rigid frame, and also a very long example. Its unusual design includes tapered bents which curve at the top to form part of the girders (a rigid-frame combines superstructure and substructure into one solid structure). This bridge varies a bit from typical rigid-frame design however in that the center portion of the plate girder superstructures are actually separate structures that rest on bearings cantilevered from the bents/frames.
The Historic Bridge Inventory mentions that in 1977 the sidewalks were replaced. However, the brackets for the sidewalks underneath (which the inventory seems to imply were also replaced) are riveted and thus appear to be original. Rivets were not being used by 1977 for this type of structural steel.
