This is a tiny pony truss bridge and its use of simple paired angles for members makes it look even smaller than it is. Despite its lightweight construction, the bridge was widened in 1947, something which is not often done with truss bridges because the increased deck area increases the dead load and potential live load placed on the trusses.
Information and Findings From New Jersey's Historic Bridge InventoryDiscussion of Bridge The 3-panel riveted Warren pony truss bridge is supported on ashlar abutments which have been widened with concrete. One wingwall is stone, the others are concrete. When the bridge was widened in 1947, the entire flooring system was redone. The top chord of back-toback angles has an added welded cover plate, and welded reinforcing has been added to upper panel points. Design integrity has been compromised. The undocumented, altered span is one of more than 20 similar bridges in the county. Discussion of Surrounding Area The bridge carries a 2-lane lightly traveled rural road over a minor stream in a wooded rural setting. Nearby are open fields and scattered 18th- and 19th-century homes. Bridge Considered Historic By Survey: No |
