This bridge is an outstanding and rare example of a Strauss heel-trunnion bascule bridge. It is particularly rare since it serves highway traffic; most surviving bridges of this type are railroad bridges. Further, this bridge does remain active for boats. The bridge is unusual among Strauss heel-trunnion truss bridges since its truss configuration follows a Pratt design rather than the Warren. The bridge also has an unusual detail in the deck design. On the far end of the bridge, for the last three panels of the truss, the bottom chord and deck slopes downward. At the same time, the top chord does not change direction. Not only is this sloped deck detail unusual, it also means that the truss is deeper at the far end of the leaf, which is highly unusual. These unique details only enhance this bridge's significance as a noteworthy historic bridge that demonstrates the ingenuity of engineer Joseph Strauss and his firm.
