This historic bridge was demolished and replaced in 2010!

This bridge is a rare example of a pony truss that has many spans, in this case, five spans. Each span contains a very tall pony truss span, which adds to the impressive and unique appearance of this bridge. Usually through truss spans are used for longer multi-span bridges, so the pony trusses here are unusual. While a later example of a riveted truss bridge, the bridge remains significant due to its multi-span configuration. In addition, as this country moved into the 21st Century and these bridges become older and fewer in number, the significance of surviving structures increases and must be recognized.

This bridge has suffered from a lack of maintenance and rust on the bridge was not dealt with, leading to section loss. While HistoricBridges.org believes this bridge could have been restored despite these conditions, demolition was chosen for this historic bridge. Since the 21st Century began, the Allegheny River, once one of the most historic bridge filled rivers in the country, now has been the victim of rampant demolition in Pennsylvania, and apparently the river is not even safe in New York, which usually displays a stronger commitment to preservation. The demolition of this bridge will be one more step down for this river's culture and heritage.
