About This Bridge

Playing an important role in bringing the use of metal into popular United States bridge construction, bowstring truss bridges based off of the patented design of Squire Whipple (often called Whipple Arch bridges) are generally among the oldest metal bridges in the country, and even this relatively late 1870 example is no exception to that. The bridge is also the only remaining multi-span Whipple Arch. The bridge has been closed to all traffic but retains excellent historic integrity.

Help Save This Historic Bridge!

In April 2012, a petition was started by the Claverack Historic Preservation Advisory Committee, directed to the Preservation League of NYS & NYS Council on the Arts (Preserve New York, Grant Program) to have a $10,000 engineering analysis conducted to develop a scope of work for the preservation of this abandoned historic bridge. Please sign the petition to help the active effort to save this nationally significant historic bridge.
