This tiny pony truss had its trusses turned into non-structural decorations, and is an illustration of the risks associated with doing this. Once trusses are converted decorative by adding a load-bearing superstructure, there is no longer an incentive to preserve the trusses since they are no longer holding the bridge up. Indeed, that is what happened here, as the bridge trusses exhibited massive section loss that would have likely caused a collapse if the trusses were still load-bearing. The bridge truly met its fate later when someone drove over one of the trusses, completely crushing it into scrap. Lesson Number One: Only turn trusses decorative with a committment for continued preservation/maintenance of the trusses. Lesson Number 2: Even decorative trusses require protection from America's many bad drivers who often are paying attention to just about anything except what is going on in the road ahead.
The bridge had distinctive details of the Groton Bridge Company (plaque remnants and cast iron pin caps) and may have dated to ca. 1885-1895.
