Bridge Documentation

Although built in 1969, this bridge is significant as the only known vertical lift bridge in North Carolina. The bridge can be raised 135 feet. The towers rise 160 feet above the river. A company in North Carolina called Bowers Construction Company appears to have been involved with the construction of the bridge, perhaps the substructure. A crane with that name appears in a historical photo. The bridge was considered a "high-level" bridge even though it has a lift span. This is because the previous bridges in the area were bascule bridges that were much lower and have to open for more boats. The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge is high enough above the water that smaller boats can pass under the bridge without having to raise the lift span.
